I have a TV with a single hdmi input. If I buy a receiver with 3 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output and put the output into the TV, then the receiver should act as an hdmi splitter correct?

Technically the receiver is a switcher not a splitter, but it does exactly what you describe.
Yes your receiver would work as a “splitter” so that you can connect more than 1 hdmi device with a single output that would connect to your tv so you can toggle between devices and still view them on your tv. also you should make sure to have digital output so get the best quality of sound.
if you are looking for a true “splitter” you can go to bestbuy.
