B) Is it possible to achieve DTS 7.1 surround sound with separates? Almost all amplifiers I’ve seen are mono or two-channel.

You aren’t looking very hard then. There are 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 channel amps available from any hi fi store.
There are lots of prepros with the latest surround formats built-in, and many others that can be upgraded.
What’s your budget?
Why can’t you use four stereo amplifiers to achieve 7.1 surround? You certainly could push a lot more power with seperates than with integrated. My next system will be seperates.
You might try…
-or, my definitions-
SEPARATES
Pros: Usually better sound; more upgrade options; you still can use the rest of your system if one component needs servicing
Cons: Usually more expensive; takes up more space; uses more outlets and power; needs more cables
INTEGRATED SYSTEM
Pros: Usually less expensive; less gear to deal with; less demand on your electric bill
Cons: Usually not quite the performance of separates; more chance to not be able to use your system if an item (i.e. A/V receiver) needs servicing

There are quite a few 7-channel amplifiers out
there (if you just know where to look) along with
the 2-channel, 3-channel, 5-channel, and mono-
block amplifiers…
Just pair them up with a matching preamp/
processor, and add one (or two) powered
subwoofers, and your in like Flinn!
